Trend Alert: Blunt Bangs

Although I am a surgeon, my patients often ask me make-up and hair questions, especially what new trends will look best with their particular features (after all, won’t the same dress look different on every woman’s figure?). Your hair is one of your greatest accessories, and the style options are endless: long, short, dyed, highlighted, up, down, bangs, no bangs… After this year’s Golden Globes, I have had many friends and patients ask my opinion about blunt bangs. Thanks to celebrities like Sandra Bullock and Olivia Wilde, this style is becoming a new trend. There are some face shapes that this style works for; it can be especially flattering for woman with heart-shaped or inverted triangular face shapes, which usually feature wide or full foreheads. On other face shapes, the blunt bangs can be unflattering and overpowering, detracting from facial features. In short, this is not a suitable hairstyle for most women. However, despite their unflattering nature I am wondering if, at least in the case of Bullock, Tyler, and Ricci (all in their 30’s or 40’s) the bangs may be an attempt to hide the need for Botox! Bangs this length certainly do hide everything…
