Why You Should Choose a Facial Plastic Surgeon for Your Rhinoplasty

When all facial features are in harmony, the first feature to be noticed on a person’s face is statistically the eyes. However, if one’s nose has even a minor ‘imperfection’, it can dominate the rest of the features because of its placement as the centerpiece. This can cause the face to have a less harmonious appearance, causing the person to want it to be modified which can often be accomplished with a rhinoplasty.

What is a Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty, commonly known as “nose job” and medically called “nasal reconstruction,” is a popular surgical procedure for patients who are unsatisfied with the shape and size of their nose or have difficulty breathing due to injury or malformation.

The goal of rhinoplasty is to reconstruct a patient’s nose in relation to all the other facial features, achieving a balanced look. Getting a nose job done does not only change the appearance of your nose, it completely changes how the rest of your face is perceived.

The procedure may include resizing the nostrils, removal of a nasal hump and depression on the bridge, reshaping the nasal tip, and overall reconstruction of the nose.

Types of Rhinoplasty

Closed Rhinoplasty – This is the most popular type of nose job with incisions made within the nose, hence there is little or no visible scarring on the nose after the procedure. This surgery is less invasive and allows small structural changes to be made to the nose. Hence, if you require a more intensive nose reconstruction, a different type of rhinoplasty is required.

Open Rhinoplasty – Open rhinoplasty is a more intensive procedure for patients that require extensive work done on their noses. This allows the surgeon more space to reshape and make major structural changes to the nose. This procedure is used when correcting nasal deformities caused by severe trauma to the nose.

Revision Rhinoplasty – After the primary procedure, a patient may require a revision rhinoplasty if they are unsatisfied with the result of the nose job or to correct complications created by the primary procedure, such as breathing difficulties.

Filler Rhinoplasty – Although “rhinoplasty” specifically denotes a surgical nasal procedure, “filler rhinoplasty” is a term frequently used to describe a non-surgical nose job. This treatment is quick, non-invasive and easily reversible.

Choosing the Right Surgeon for Your Rhinoplasty

While one should always take caution when choosing a surgeon, selecting the right one to complete your rhinoplasty is especially important as it can not only dramatically alter one’s appearance, but also affect their physiological functions such as breathing.

You likely know to check their credentials (if not, please do!), but there are a few considerations many do not think of when selecting the best rhinoplasty surgeon for them, including:

  • Are the surgeon’s certifications in good standing? When consulting with the rhinoplasty surgeon, you may see diplomas and licenses on the walls of their office. It should be part of your preliminary checks to verify that their board-certifications are in good standing with the governing authorities.
  • Does the surgeon specialize in facial cosmetic surgery? To achieve the best results and avoid issues, it should be a non-negotiable that the rhinoplasty surgeon you select specializes in facial cosmetic surgery.
  • Does the surgeon have ample experience performing rhinoplasty on your type of nose? Different ethnicities have varying anatomical structures. If you are of Asian ethnicity, for example, it is highly recommended that you find a facial plastic surgeon who specializes in rhinoplasty for your nasal structure.

Did you know? Dr. Jennifer Levine is one of only a few surgeons who are double-board certified by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and the American Board of Otolaryngology-head and neck surgery – giving her a unique knowledge of the face and its underlying structures. Although we have various non-surgical body sculpting treatments, Dr. Levine strictly performs facial plastic surgery.
