Non-Surgical vs. Surgical Nose Job

Nose Job

A surgical nose job, also known as rhinoplasty, is a procedure designed to improve the appearance of the nose and/or address functional concerns. (1) Meanwhile, a non-surgical nose job uses dermal fillers to reshape or sculpt the nose. Both procedures have their own unique benefits—the optimal choice for you will depend on your aesthetic goals, structural concerns, and long-term preferences.

If you are interested in learning more about the various types of nose jobs, Dr. Jennifer Levine can help you explore your options. Dr. Levine is a facial surgeon in New York City who is double board-certified by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the American Board of Otolaryngology. She offers more than 30 years of experience and has helped thousands of patients—within New York City and beyond—enhance their appearance with both non-surgical and surgical techniques.

About Surgical Nose Jobs

Dr. Levine can perform a surgical nose job for both functional and aesthetic concerns. Many patients are looking to refine the shape of their nose, correct breathing concerns, and address any changes caused by injury or trauma. Surgical rhinoplasties are one of the most commonly performed plastic surgery procedures in the country, with thousands of cases addressed each year. (1)

During a surgical nose job, you will be placed under general anesthesia. Dr. Levine will place an incision either inside the nostrils or across the columella. These approaches are referred to as a closed nose job or an open rhinoplasty, respectively. Through the incision, she will reshape and restructure your nasal cartilage and bone. She may reposition the underlying nasal bones, use cartilage grafts, or remove excess tissue. After achieving your desired appearance and improving function, Dr. Levine will close your incisions.

About Non-Surgical Nose Jobs

A non-surgical nose job, also known as a liquid nose job or liquid rhinoplasty, elevates the appearance of the nose without incisions, general anesthesia, or a lengthy recovery time. This procedure uses dermal fillers, threads, and Botox to achieve its effects and has gained popularity over the last few years due to its high safety profile, lower costs, and essentially zero recovery time. (2) This procedure is ideal if you are looking for temporary enhancements and more subtle alterations, as non-surgical nose jobs cannot alter the underlying structures of your nose.

Dr. Levine typically uses hyaluronic acid-based (HA) dermal fillers, such as Juvederm and Restylane, for these procedures. She uses a topical anesthetic to ensure your comfort. The chosen filler may also contain a numbing agent, depending on the brand or formula.

Dr. Levine will administer the selected formula(s) into specific areas on your nose. She can refine the tip of your nose, smooth your dorsal hump, and even enhance the symmetry of your nasal bridge.

Candidates

Anyone interested in either a non-surgical or surgical nose job should be in good general health and have realistic expectations. Dr. Levine will determine each patient’s candidacy during their consultation.

Non-Surgical Candidates

Best suited for those seeking subtle, temporary refinements without incisions or downtime. Ideal for correcting mild to moderate concerns or for patients wanting to “test” results before surgery.

Surgical Candidates

Recommended for patients seeking functional or structural correction, such as fixing a dorsal hump, crooked bridge, deviated septum, or breathing issues. Candidates should desire permanent results and be prepared for a recovery period, as well as taking time off work.

Personal Consultation

Before undergoing your nose job, you will need to attend a personal consultation with Dr. Levine. She will discuss your medical history, concerns, and treatment goals, as well as evaluate your nasal structure and facial proportions.

Using this information, Dr. Levine will determine whether a non-surgical or surgical nose job is right for you and recommend the best techniques. She will craft your treatment plan and ensure each of your concerns is addressed.

Preparation

After establishing your procedure plan, you will receive a set of preparation instructions from either Dr. Levine or another member of her team. The instructions between non-surgical and surgical nose jobs will vary, with non-surgical nose jobs requiring less preparation compared to their surgical alternative.

For both procedures, you will need to refrain from using medication and supplements that contain blood-thinning properties. All patients need to avoid alcohol consumption, and if applicable, they will also need to cease nicotine use.

If you are undergoing a surgical nose job, you will also need to arrange transportation home and time away from your career and other commitments. We also recommend arranging assistance for the first few days of your recovery.

Recovery

Non-Surgical Nose Job Recovery

After a non-surgical nose job, you will be able to return to your daily activities immediately—there is essentially no recovery time associated with dermal fillers besides swelling and soreness. You should, however, avoid touching, massaging, or putting any other pressure on your nose. (2) Our team will let you know what other precautions you should take before you head home.

Surgical Nose Job Recovery

If you undergo a surgical nose job, you will need to take about two weeks away from work and your routine. Dr. Levine will remove the splint and non-dissolvable sutures after the first week. After approximately two weeks, you will be able to return to light activities and desk work, but you will need to continue avoiding high-impact or physical activities until Dr. Levine approves.

Corresponding and Combination Procedures

Dr. Levine can perform other procedures in conjunction with your nose job to provide deeper facial rejuvenation and more comprehensive results. Many of our patients choose to combine their nose job with either chin augmentations, submental liposuction, or facial balancing injectables to revitalize the lower third portion of their face in addition to the central nasal area.

Chin Implant

Chin augmentation is a surgical procedure that places a biocompatible implant into the chin to reinforce its structure and appearance. Dr. Levine can perform this procedure to correct the protrusion of your chin, sharpen the definition of your jawline, as well as enhance the overall symmetry of your face.

When combined with rhinoplasty, a chin augmentation can increase the definition and harmony between the midface and jawline for a stronger, more proportionate appearance.

Submental Liposuction

Submental liposuction, also known as chin liposuction, is a procedure that can effectively remove stubborn fat from beneath the chin and jawline. The fatty tissues gathered here can create the appearance of “submental fullness,” also known as a “double-chin.”

When performed alongside rhinoplasty, submental liposuction can help achieve more comprehensive and cohesive rejuvenation overall.

Facial Balancing Injectables

Facial balancing is an advanced procedure that strategically uses non-surgical treatments to enhance the balance and proportions of your face. Dr. Levine can combine several treatments, such as dermal fillers, neuromodulators, and radiofrequency (RF) treatments, to address concerns such as asymmetry, volume loss, facial definition, and more.

When it is performed alongside rhinoplasty, facial balancing can help you refine the harmony between your various features. Dr. Levine can assess your skin to determine the most effective combination of treatments for your concerns, allowing you to achieve a more refreshed appearance that still looks and feels like you.

Cost of Non-Surgical or Surgical Nose Jobs in New York City

The cost of your nose job will vary depending on several factors, including whether a non-surgical or surgical procedure is performed, the type and amount of filler used, the surgical strategies employed, and more. Dr. Levine will discuss the cost of your nose job during your consultation after establishing your treatment plan.

FAQ

What is the difference between a non-surgical and a surgical nose job?

A non-surgical nose job utilizes dermal fillers to alter the appearance of your nose, while a surgical nose job reshapes the tissue, bone, and cartilage of your nose.

Can a non-surgical nose job replace a surgical nose job?

While a non-surgical nose job can produce similar results to a surgical nose job, it cannot fully replace or replicate the effects of a surgical nose job.

How long will my recovery take after a non-surgical nose job compared to a surgical nose job?

Each patient’s recovery timeline will vary, but those who receive a non-surgical nose job can often return to their routines immediately, while patients who undergo a surgical nose job typically return to work within a few weeks.

Are the results of either a non-surgical or surgical nose job reversible?

The results of a non-surgical nose job may be reversed if hyaluronic acid fillers are used. The results of a surgical nose job are permanent and may only be modified through another procedure called a revision rhinoplasty.
