About Hispanic Rhinoplasty

Hispanic rhinoplasty is a type of ethnic rhinoplasty that is tailored to provide results that align with the unique structure and beauty standards of patients with Hispanic heritage. Hispanic rhinoplasty techniques are designed to refine the nasal tip, support the cartilage framework, subtly project the nose, and narrow or reshape the alar base, all while respecting the natural characteristics of the nose. (2) The goal of Hispanic rhinoplasty is not to erase cultural features, but to enhance their balance with the rest of the face to align one’s appearance with their goals. Dr. Levine’s surgical experience and otolaryngology background give her a unique understanding of the nose that sets her apart from other surgeons in the area.

Candidates

Candidates for a Hispanic rhinoplasty typically include those of Hispanic descent who are interested in addressing functional or aesthetic concerns through the use of grafts or restructuring while preserving the natural characteristics of their ethnicity. This procedure is recommended for those experiencing a dorsal hump, bulbous or undefined nasal tip, flared nostrils, or a flat and/or low nasal bridge. Patients experiencing nasal blockages or difficulties breathing may also make suitable candidates. (3)

Anyone interested in this procedure should be in good general health and have realistic expectations. Candidates should also be nonsmokers or willing to quit throughout their preparation and recovery. Dr. Levine will determine each patient’s eligibility during their personal consultation.

Personal Consultation

Before scheduling your Hispanic rhinoplasty, you will need to attend a personal consultation at our office on the Upper East Side. Dr. Levine is trusted and known for her thorough pre-procedure consultations. During these meetings, she takes the time to understand your personal concerns and discuss the details of your procedure. She will also evaluate your nose, as well as your general facial structure.

Once Dr. Levine has gathered the required information, she will determine whether you are eligible for this procedure and start developing your treatment plan. She can also employ a 3D imaging program so that you can see a visual representation of your potential results.

Preparation

When preparing for your rhinoplasty, there are several guidelines you will need to follow to facilitate a successful procedure and smooth recovery.

You will likely be advised to discontinue medications and supplements with blood-thinning properties leading up to your appointment date. Smoking should also be fully ceased several weeks beforehand.

You will need to prepare to take time away from work and other commitments to focus on your recovery. You should also arrange transportation home from your procedure, as well as fill any prescriptions ahead of time.

Procedure

Depending on your circumstances, Dr. Levine may perform either a closed or open rhinoplasty. A closed rhinoplasty places the incisions inside the nose and is reserved for less extensive adjustments. An open rhinoplasty requires an incision to be made on the columella, or the tissue between the nostrils. (3)

Hispanic rhinoplasty often requires special attention to the thickness of the nasal skin. Patients of Hispanic descent typically possess thicker nasal skin, meaning that there will be special considerations made when reshaping the nose. (2) Dr. Levine typically performs cartilage grafting to provide further definition, shape, and support to the nose. Cartilage grafts may be taken from either the ear, septum, or ribs. (3)

Some Hispanic patients undergoing this procedure also choose to reduce the height of their dorsal bridge. When making this adjustment, Dr. Levine focuses on straightening the nasal bridge while still preserving a slight slope into the nasal tip. This is done to preserve the balance between the other facial features and the nose, as an over-correction of height can result in a disproportionate appearance.

To create a more refined alar base, Dr. Levine can remove excess soft tissue found around the base of the nose that contributes to a wider width. For patients concerned about flaring, a small wedge of soft tissue may also be excised from the outer border of the nostril. This technique may be performed on one or both sides of the nose. (3)

After making the necessary corrections, Dr. Levine will carefully close incisions with sutures and apply a splint to protect and support the new shape of the nose. You will then be taken to our recovery suite to rest under the care of our team until you are ready to go home.

Why Choose Dr. Levine?

It is paramount that the surgeon you choose for your procedure is an expert in ethnic rhinoplasties. Dr. Levine is an experienced rhinoplasty surgeon with over 30 years of experience performing facial procedures on patients of all backgrounds. She is one of the few surgeons who is double-board certified by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the American Board of Otolaryngology (head and neck surgery), making her one of the most sought-after surgeons for rhinoplasties of all varieties. By choosing Dr. Levine, you are working with one of the most established and trusted facial surgeons in New York City.

Recovery

During recovery, you can expect to experience swelling, bruising, or tenderness around your nose and eyes. These effects will subside gradually on their own, but may also be managed using pain management prescribed by Dr. Levine. It is recommended to keep your head elevated as you rest to help reduce swelling.

During the first week of your recovery, you will need to wear a splint to maintain and protect the new shape of your nose. In certain cases, bandages may also be applied. Dr. Levine will ask you to attend a follow-up appointment to remove these dressings, as well as take out any non-dissolvable sutures that may be present.

Most patients can return to work and light activities after approximately two weeks. However, any physical or high-impact activities should continue to be avoided until Dr. Levine approves, especially if they may affect your nose.

Results

Once you have made a complete recovery, you will be able to enjoy a nasal shape that aligns with your ideal aesthetic. Your nose may appear straighter, more symmetrical, and more proportionate, enhancing both your facial balance and overall appearance. Dr. Levine tailors each treatment plan to your specific goals rather than using the same techniques for each patient. Her advanced techniques and attention to detail leave minimal scarring that is barely noticeable once the nose has fully healed.

Corresponding and Combination Procedures

Chin Augmentation

Chin augmentation is a surgical procedure that is performed to enhance the appearance of the chin using either an implant or reshaping techniques. Chin augmentation may be performed to correct a recessed chin, improve jawline definition, and enhance your overall facial proportions. Because both the nose and chin are central facial features, it is important that they are proportionate for optimal facial balance.

Revision Rhinoplasty

If you’ve had a previous rhinoplasty, your procedure will be considered a type of revision rhinoplasty. This complex procedure corrects cosmetic or functional issues from earlier procedures. Choosing a highly experienced surgeon like Dr. Levine is essential, as revision rhinoplasty requires additional considerations and nuances. Patients should wait at least one year after their initial rhinoplasty before undergoing a revision.

Non-Surgical Nose Job

At Dr. Levine’s practice, a non-surgical nose job, or liquid rhinoplasty, uses dermal fillers and PDO threads to temporarily enhance the shape of the nose without surgery. It’s ideal for those seeking subtle, non-permanent improvements with minimal downtime.
